“She was named Sarah, but she changed her name to Sasha.
“Sarah sounds holier and old school,” she says.
But Sasha is not your ordinary village girl. She’s a sassy young woman with a taste for finer things—a self-proclaimed slayqueen and supposed entrepreneur in businesses no one can quite define.
She tells us she’s self-employed, into modeling, and runs online shops selling the trendiest fashion. But ask Sasha the name of her online shop, and her face will suddenly change. Try asking a second time, and prepare for a warning to mind your own business. Ask where she models or request to see her portfolio? She’ll politely (or not so politely) distance herself from you.
Yet Sasha owns the latest iPhones, iPads, and tablets. Her wardrobe is filled with designer clothes, shoes, and bags. She wears only original makeup, and her wigs? They could easily buy you a piece of land in Kitengela.
Sasha starts her mornings in a Westlands gym, then heads off for a massage, photoshoot, salon visit, or mani-pedi. By lunchtime, she’s at a posh hotel, and in the evening, she’s sipping cocktails at a rooftop bar in Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Westlands—anywhere the rich dine. How do I know? Simple. Sasha updates everything on social media.
She also makes frequent trips to Dubai and Zanzibar, saying it’s for her mental health. In Dubai, she pops champagne on yachts, shops at designer stores, dines in luxury hotels, and floods her socials with picturesque backdrops. She returns with bags full of designer perfumes, original makeup, the latest iPhone, and a wardrobe upgrade.
One day, we politely asked her in the family WhatsApp group to teach us how to do business like her. We also want to sell trendy clothes and tap into the kind of clientele that sends you to Dubai with iPhones in your carry-on. Sasha got furious and left the group.
But really, what’s so wrong with asking your cousin to teach you how to sell clothes and shoes online?
